What You Are Seeing

Allen Park's median house went up around 1955, and that number matters more than it looks. A torsion spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles, about 7 to 10 years of normal use, which means the spring on a house built in 1955 has been swapped out at least a handful of times by now, but the mounting hardware around it often hasn't. The center bracket, the shaft, the bearing plates, those get reused job after job because they still hold, right up until the day the metal fatigues and the spring itself lets go without warning.

What you're usually seeing when you call us is one of two things: a spring that's snapped clean, leaving a door too heavy to lift by hand, or a spring that's stretched and sagging, leaving the door creeping down a few inches on its own overnight. Either way, on a lot of these mid-50s Allen Park houses, the door drops off a single center torsion spring rather than the two-spring setup you'd find on newer stock nearby. That single-spring detail changes what's on the truck and how the job gets priced, so it's worth knowing before we knock on the door.

Winters here are the other half of the story. Cold, brittle steel and a spring already near the end of its cycle count is a bad combination, and that's usually when the phone rings.

What Is on the Truck

For a house from this era we bring both 7-foot and 8-foot torsion springs, since ceiling height on these older Allen Park garages runs shorter than what gets built today, and we've been burned before showing up with only the modern size. We carry standard-wind and left-wind coils, replacement center brackets and end bearing plates, because on a house this age the bracket itself is often as fatigued as the spring that broke.

We also stock winding bars and a full set of cable drums, since a snapped spring on a single-spring setup frequently takes the cable or the drum lining with it on the way down. If your door is one of the two-spring conversions that got added later by a previous owner, we carry that hardware too, but we won't know which setup you have until we're standing in front of it.

One honest limitation: we do not carry every obscure extension-spring bracket from the original 1950s builds. Some of that hardware was proprietary to the builder and hasn't been made in decades. If your door still runs on that original stamped bracket, we may need to convert the whole assembly to a standard torsion setup rather than patch the original, that's a bigger job than a spring swap, and we'll tell you that up front, not after we've started.

Can You Do This Yourself

A torsion spring is under enough tension to break a bone or worse, and that doesn't change because the house is old or new. We don't recommend winding or unwinding one without the right bars and a clamp, full stop.

What you can safely check yourself: whether the door drops slowly on its own when disconnected from the opener (sagging spring), whether there's a visible gap in a coil (broken spring), and whether the cables look frayed near the drums. Photograph what you see and tell us on the phone, it helps us bring the right spring size the first time instead of a second trip.

What you should never do: cut a wound spring, try to rehang a cable under tension, or force the door open past the point it stops moving freely. On a house built in the mid-1950s, corroded or seized hardware sometimes hides behind the spring itself, and pulling on it wrong can bring a bracket down with it.

Why did my spring break with no warning?

Torsion springs fail by fatigue, not by sudden strain. On a house from the mid-1950s the coil has usually cycled tens of thousands of times, and it finally lets go on an ordinary lift like any other day. Cold weather makes the steel more brittle, which is part of why these calls cluster in winter.

Do I have one spring or two?

Most original setups on Allen Park's 1950s housing stock ran a single center torsion spring rather than the twin-spring bracket common on newer doors. Look at the shaft above the door, one spring sits dead center, two sit spaced apart near each end. Tell us which you see when you call.

Is it worth replacing just the spring, or the whole door?

If the panels, track, and rollers are sound, a spring swap is almost always the cheaper fix. We only recommend replacing the door itself when the original hardware, like a proprietary bracket from the 1950s build, can't be matched and needs a full conversion.
